Two Months Later: Joplin Tornado Recovery Efforts

It’s been just over two months since the May 22, 2011 tornado that devastated an enormous swath of Joplin, including St. John’s Hospital. Shortly after the Joplin tornado, an F5 tornado struck Piedmont, OK. In both cases, reconstruction is slow, and much work remains to be done.

Here is what the area just around St. John’s Hospital looks like as of July 30th, 2011, when we drove through on our way back to OKC from Table Rock, MO (Note: license these images through my Flickr stream or website).

In every disaster, it seems there is always at least one tree that survives and becomes a symbol of renewal and recovery. This tree, below, is showing signs of new life, despite the fact that the metal still remains wrapped around its branches where the wind left it.

The surviving flag pole still flies a flag at half mast.

Remember the residents, businesses, and relief workers of Joplin in your prayers. A long road is still ahead for them! Visit the City of Joplin’s website for details about current efforts, and to donate if you can!

About Holly Baumann Photography

I am Holly Baumann Ambuehl, a commercial and portrait photographer based in Central Illinois. My blog posts feature client work, but I just love to write, so I also write about owning a business, food and drink, travel, and my personal life! I am always honored when clients trust me to capture their vision, and equally so when my readers converse with me about what I've photographed or expressed here. I hope we'll have an opportunity to collaborate professionally and/or become friends. I'd love to hear what you think! - Holly
